How is it performed?

GYROKINESIS® (Yoga in Motion) classes are open to the public with drop in's always welcome (stools and mats are provided). The practice of GYROTONIC® exercise (equipment based) begins with private lessons. From there students either continue to work privately one-on-one with an instructor or may join one of our more advanced duet or group trio classes.

With it's beautiful hand-crafted wooden equipment offering both support and the resistance of water, exercising on the equipment provides similar benefits as yoga, swimming and gymnastics (producing long lean strong muscles and increased flexibility) via unique arching, curling and spiraling movements with counter balanced weights (yet without any strain to the body). The levers, pulleys and handles provide continuous resistance, developing muscles that are generally ignored in standard exercise approaches.

Yes. Because of the use of machines, comparisons with Pilates arise. While Pilates moves in mostly straight lines and linear movements focusing on specific body parts staying still and stable while others move, GYROTONIC® principles embody the idea that there are no straight lines in nature and that everything that lives moves. Therefore GYROTONIC® movements are comprised of arcs, circles, and spirals in a continuous flow or dance of life, breath and movement.

 

The exercises are powerful, and when performed with conscious breathwork not only work all the muscles and joints, but also stimulate and massage the internal organs, leaving you with a feeling of rejuvenation and vitality! The History of GYROTONIC®

 

GYROTONIC Founder Juliu HorvathThe very effective and low impact system of GYROTONIC® was developed in the mid 1980’s by Juliu Horvath, a Hungarian raised in Romania and a former ballet dancer with the New York City Opera. After experiencing many personal struggles and chronic illnesses, along with a dance career ending injury, Juliu spent many years in self-exploration and study of Yoga, acupuncture, and meditation. These experiences not only led him to true healing, but he was also inspired to create a movement system that offers the same benefits as yoga, dance, gymnastics, swimming and tai chi, but is not derived from these other exercise modalities.

 

GYROTONIC® methodology allows users to stretch and strengthen muscles, while simultaneously stimulating and strengthening connective tissues in and around the joints of the body. These exercises are synchronized with corresponding breathing patterns, thus enhancing aerobic and cardiovascular stimulation and promoting neuro-muscular rejuvenation. The circular, spiraling and undulating movements that characterize the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® help to increase the functional capacity of the spine, contributing to a spherical and three-dimensional awareness, resulting in increased equilibrium.
